What you’ve missed Last night..

On September 13, 2023 at 7 PM EST, Mikara Reid hosted What's Your MIIEN! ? The Conversation Series on Instagram Live. In conversation with her that night was attorney Melanie Cunningham of Melanie Cunningham Law, where the ladies talked about wardrobe inventory, how important it is to know your body shape for your fashion system, the struggle of wearing certain boots and identifying your own color palette. Before they started diving into the fashion talk, Mikara Reid read a passage from What’s Your MIIEN! ? Discover Your Fashion Identity, so Melanie could get a better understanding on how to breakdown her closet organization:

Clothing Selection

Before you start wardrobing, one of the questions that should run through your mind is “How do I start grouping and selecting my clothes cohesively?”

We went over your wardrobe inventory in Chapter 1, Section V (wardrobe inventory), and you’re probably wondering what you should do next. Take an inventory before you can plan to start grouping. You need to look at what you already own and compare it with your lifestyle needs. If you’re a mom who’s about to go back to work part-time as a real estate agent and you’ve been wearing loungewear for the past few years, expect to have new demands placed on your fashion system.

Do you have items in your closet that can take you beyond the first, last, and in-between impressions? How much time do you want to spend getting dressed every morning? What percentage of your week will you need to dress in casual wear? How often will you need to dress formally? Think about the clothes categories you wear multiple times a week. This is why the calendar activity and clothing mix exercises are important to do because it’s a starting point for you to know how to create your image management plan based on what your needs are.

Everyone’s needs and clothes are different. Therefore, you will have to sit down and know what works for you so your image has a strong and cohesive message. You will also have to consider what matters most to you, as that will determine what your primary items are.

As time is a limited resource we can never truly own, we tend to try to make the best of every hour. On this note, most people have four main areas in which they spend their time.

  1. Family time: This is the time spent getting to know your family better, cooking, mothering/fathering your children, and visiting relatives.

  2. Professional time: This is the time spent working or networking. It could be work as a full-time employee or part-timer; volunteer work; side gigs; and conventions. It’s the time spent with colleagues.

  3. Social time: This is the time spent trying to build relationships outside of our professional circle. This set time allows people to be friends, take part in cultural activities, be friendly neighbors, and attend church or other religious activities.

  4. Me time: This is the time spent alone doing what we love: facials, yoga, exercise, sleeping, sewing, crocheting, or golfing.
